A Few Things You Need To Know About Generative AI

Hey Reader,
Generative AI is an unsupervised learning method that enables an AI model to create new content from vast amounts of training data.
Microsoft, OpenAI, and Google have introduced powerful viral tools that have opened the floodgates to a new way of working and a whole new set of tools. These are being integrated into workflows today with great success.
Here's an overview of a few significant AI events:
- In December 2022, OpenAI launched ChatGPT. ChatGPT is a powerful tool that uses vast amounts of data to generate new content. It opens up new possibilities for productivity, content creation, and information consumption, leading to innovative applications and industry implications.
- ChatGPT made history by reaching over 100 million users in under 2 months.
- January 2023, Microsoft announced their new generative AI advanced Bing search experience and Edge browser, which leverages a more advanced ChatGPT model.
- February 2023, Spotify announced a generative AI personalised DJ.
- February 2023, Notion opened access to their generative AI summarisation tool, leveraging OpenAI's ChatGPT.
Changing the way we work
Generative AI is changing how future workers create and consume content. They will expect assistance with summarising information; there will be a shift when creating content where people will be more limited by their imagination, not their skill set.
With generative AI, even wild and ambiguous prompts can be turned into content within seconds.
Expecting more engaging and higher-quality content
Generative AI reduces the barriers to entry for content creation, allowing people to create more engaging content with greater ease. As a result, creators can focus more on the content and message they want to convey.
The ability to turn text to videos, turn text to high-quality images for your posts and thumbnails, assistance with creating better blog and long-form posts, converting long-form videos to short videos. The possibilities are endless here.
I don’t think it’s a matter of making jobs redundant
It’s allowing people to focus on the more important aspects of their tasks at hand in their job, and allowing them to be more productive doing this.
Generative AI has an integral role in changing the way people consume and create valuable information in the workplace.
Productivity
From a productivity perspective, there’s so much potential to help people find and consume the right information a lot faster, which can allow people to focus more on their tasks at hand, which we know is a big concern for desk and frontline workers.
Implementing Solutions As A Designer
Part of a designer's job will be to help people understand how to utilise the tool in a non-obtrusive or overwhelming way, and the tool coming across more friendly, so it feels like it's assisting someone in completing their job better rather than feeling threatening by taking over their job.
Also, surely there's going to be way better user interfaces than typing to a chatbot with extremely long-winded prompts to create something compelling that reminds me of typing in a terminal window. While ChatGPT has been the fastest-growing app in history, the free-form input blank text field interface carries a fairly strong barrier to entry for casual users.
We’re just at the start
People are entitled to be sceptical about generative AI as it currently stands. Summarisation isn’t always accurate, bots can be tricked, and the media produced isn’t always engaging or compelling. The ethics of generative AI also need to be fully thought out instead of being rushed. The models are trained on existing artists’ designs, which raises questions about intellectual ownership and rights. Some may believe the narrative could be ahead of the software.
Habit Forming
We are still at the stage where people are forming habits and expectations of what they expect from these tools. Is the expectation for people to create scripts and get summaries natively through the browser experience, or is it up to the web apps to offer a better experience here? I think it will be a real missed opportunity if you don't explore this space.

Please support me in my first half-marathon!
Tomorrow I am running my first marathon in Palestine to support those in need after the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
As part of my trip, I will be assisting at refugee camps in Palestine, providing essential aid such as clean water, food, and medical care.
I would greatly appreciate your support and donations to help make a difference. Thank you in advance for your generosity! Let's try and get to £1000! 🙌
How Intercom Have Been Leveraging Generative AI
Listen to this podcast to learn more about how Intercom have been leveraging the great summarisation capability of GPT to provide value to customers for providing customer service.
They also touch on the current limitations of the tech, having limited business context when trying to produce smart replies.
It definitely opened my eyes up to the value generative AI is providing today.
Shoe Dog By Phil Knight
"Shoe Dog" by Phil Knight is a must-read for anyone interested in entrepreneurship, grit, sacrifice, and the story of Nike.
The founders of Nike were extremely passionate about running and shoes and were determined to make things work. Despite competing against Adidas, Puma, and others, they managed to innovate due to their deep knowledge of the field of trainers and their unwavering passion.
They came up with iconic products such as the "Corsairs" and the "waffle trainer". It's incredible to think how many times Nike could have gone bankrupt due to the crazy leveraging and debt they took on. However, through sheer passion, hard work, and a strong belief in fate, they became the giant we know today.
Overall, "Shoe Dog" is a captivating read that provides valuable insights into the world of entrepreneurship and the power of perseverance. Whether you're a business owner or just looking for an inspiring story, this book is well worth your time.
